Insurance & Coverage Overview

Insurance & Risk Management | Alumni Association of the University of Michigan

The Association's insurance coverage is also provided to recognized alumni clubs. Below is a general description of the Association's insurance coverage as it applies to clubs. Clubs should contact the Association's Regional Relations team if they have any questions about insurance or risk management. This document is not intended to interpret or summarize all policy terms, conditions and exclusions. Coverage can only be determined by an insurance professional reading a complete copy of a policy and exact circumstances of a claim or incident

Any injury, claim, or incident that could give rise to a claim should be reported by the club to the Association immediately. This is a brief description only, no interpretation of coverage can be made without a licensed insurance professional reviewing the actual policies.

  • General Liability: The Association maintains third-party liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage (to others), which covers all sanctioned clubs for events sponsored by the Association (i.e., the club’s official activities). Members and volunteers are additional insureds with respect to their liability for covered AAUM activities, or activities they perform only on your behalf.

  • Automobile: For vehicles that are not owned by the Association (including hired or borrowed vehicles), the Association’s auto insurance policy will provide excess (secondary) liability coverage when the vehicle is driven by an AAUM volunteer on club business. Coverage does not apply while driving to and from events. Physical damage coverage for vehicles that are not owned by the Association is not covered. Coverage does not apply to vehicles owned or leased by club members. Deductibles are the responsibility of the vehicle owners or drivers.

  • Worker’s Compensation: In the event that a club hires an employee (e.g., a club administrator), the club shall be responsible for purchasing worker’s compensation insurance in compliance with applicable state laws. AAUM does not carry any workers compensation coverage.

  • Medical/Accident & Property Insurance: The Association does not provide medical or accident insurance coverage for alumni club members, and it does not provide property insurance coverage to personal property owned by the clubs or their members.

  • Directors and Officers Insurance Coverage: The Association maintains insurance coverage to pay on behalf of the Directors and Officers of clubs for wrongful acts in the administration of the club’s affairs (i.e., while acting within the scope of their club duties, which should be defined in writing). Wrongful acts are generally defined as meaning any error, misstatement, misleading statement, act, omission, neglect, or breach of duty committed, or attempted by a Director or Officer, or any matter claimed against a Director or Officer solely by reason of serving in such a capacity.
